Hope this brings back memories to those of you who are no longer living in our beautiful town ....Winnifred Pilgrim (Ash)

The Ode to Carbonear

Did you ever skate on Rossiter's Pond
Or swim in Knox's Hole
Or stand upon the rocky beach
And watch the caplin roll?

Did you ever sit on Harbour Rock Hill
Using the cannon for a bench
While you looked out at the Island
They defended from the French?

Did you ever catch a flat fish
Lying flat on Cameron's dock
Or hike into the Valley and carve
Your name on the Battery Rock?

Have you ever seen the grave of Sheila
Captured by pirate band
And mother of the first white child
To be born in Newfoundland?

If you have done these simple things
No matter where you roam
In dreams you'll stand on saddle Hill
And see Carbonear...... your home!

NOTE: This poem was written by W. Cameron, Grade Nine (not sure of the year)

Thanks for posting that nice poem, Winnifred. I grew up on Saddle Hill, so it really hits home for me.

Cheers,

Russ.

Thanks to Doris Russell on Facebook for confirming that The Ode to Carbonear was written by William Cameron in grade IX in 1958.

What a wonderful poem. He was so mature for his age. How was it confirmed that William Cameron wrote this in grade IX exactly? Just from Doris' memory or is there a document of some kind that confirms this?
